Privacy Policy
Version 2026-10-08.
What we collect
- Account: e-mail address and, if you set one, a password (stored only as a one-way hash), or the identifier of your Google sign-in.
- Profile: display name, date of birth, gender, bio, city, interests, what you are looking for, your preferences, and your avatar.
- Location: the position you share, to show you people nearby. You choose when to update it.
- Messages you send to people you matched with (including photos you choose to send in a private chat), and your likes, passes, blocks and reports.
- Technical data: a hashed IP address and browser name for each login session, used for security.
Signing in with Google
Google is used only to prove who you are. We receive an identifier, your email address and whether Google has verified it. We never receive your contacts or other Google data, and we do not publish your Google profile picture.
Avatars and photos
Your public picture is an illustrated avatar that may look nothing like you. Photos you choose to send in a private chat are visible only to the other person in that chat; we do not show them on your profile. They are deleted automatically after 30 days (the message stays and shows that the photo expired).
How your location is used
Your exact position is stored only to measure distance and is never sent to other people. Others see a rough distance band such as “1–3 km”. In Settings, Privacy & account you can hide yourself from Nearby at any time.
Who sees what
- People nearby who fit each other's preferences see your profile, your avatar and a rough distance.
- People you match with can chat with you and see whether you are online.
- Moderators can see a report, the profiles involved and the evidence in it.
- We do not sell your data and we do not show advertising.
How long we keep it
Data is kept while your account exists. When you delete your account we remove your profile, avatar, location, interests, messages and the photos you sent in chats, and anonymise the account. Reports and blocks that involve you are kept as safety records. Expired sign-in sessions are deleted after seven days.
Your choices and rights
- Edit your profile and avatar, change your preferences, or hide from Nearby at any time.
- Block or report anyone.
- Delete your account in Settings, Privacy & account.
- Ask us for a copy of your data or for a correction (add a contact address before launch).
Cookies
We always use one cookie, a secure sign-in cookie that keeps you logged in. We use no advertising cookies. The app stores nothing else about you in your browser except public files that make it start faster and your choice about usage statistics.
Usage statistics (Google Analytics)
Only if you press “Allow” in the banner, we use Google Analytics to count visits and see which screens are used, so we can improve the app. Until you allow it nothing is loaded and nothing is sent to Google. We send no name, e-mail address, account identifier or location, your IP address is made anonymous, and the address of a private page (a plan, a conversation, a person) is replaced by a general one such as “/plans/:id”. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser while it is on. You can say no, or change your mind at any time, in Settings, Privacy & account.
Children
NearMeetup is not for anyone under 18. If we find an under-age account we delete it.
